The SavageMan Triathlon Festival takes place in Garrett County in the heart of the Allegheny Mountains in Western Maryland. The terrain in this region is absolutely stunning and ideal for triathlon training and racing, as well as a plethora of other outdoor recreational activities.
The main staging venue for the SavageMan Triathlon Festival is Deep Creek Lake State Park, fronting on Maryland's largest inland lake with over 65 miles of shoreline formed by the hydroelectric dam of the Youghiogheny River. The park provides an ideal backdrop for spectator viewing and ample open space for all the related functions of the swim, race transitions, bike staging, the post-race party, and even much of the run course. The park boasts miles of trails and easy access to undulating country roads for the bike and run stages, as well as ample parking areas and a beach, playground, and picnic pavilion area for families and others not participating in SavageMan.
Just 90 minutes from Pittsburgh, and less than 3 hours from Washington, DC, Northern Virginia, and Baltimore, MD, Deep Creek Lake is a very popular lake vacation getaway destination and is rapidly becoming a mecca for outdoor recreational enthusiasts. In addition to the many lake activities, the region offers recreational activities abound from skiing at WISP mountain to white water rafting and kayaking on the Youghigheny River. Deep Creek State Park, Savage River State Forest, and New Germany State Forest all have camping areas and each provide numerous trails for hiking and mountain biking, and the SavageMan Half bike course passes through each.
The SavageMan Triathlon passes through all three of these state parks in addition to crossing the Continental Divide at Big Savage Mountain and climbing the vaunted Westernport Wall.
